Back in March, my husband, who has never asked for anything specific, asked me to make him a lap blanket for the “two cold days” we get in Florida every year. Since I had a lot of Simply Soft Caron yarn left over from the afghan I made for my Mom, I decide to have fun with it and knit something I hadn’t done before. And that is where all my Barbara Walker books came into play.
I have never made anything using mosaic knitting, which is basically slip stitch knitting, but I had a copy of Barbara Walker’s Sampler Knitting book with a beautiful continued strip mosaic afghan on the cover. I found a Ravelry user who made this afghan in 1975 and was I was inspired to give it a try. I’ve put my notes on Ravelry along with the Barbara Walker books and page numbers I used. This is still a work in progress and I hope to get it finished by the end of the year. So far I have five sections completed. I want to do two more sections and a border. My husband has informed me that if it turns cold before I finish, he will go out and buy a blanket. Fine I told him, I’ll just use it myself.

I have to say I really love the Caron Simply Soft yarn and I haven’t used acrylic yarn since the 70s. The color choices are fantastic and its wash and dryable, which is important for an item that is going to be used a lot. I’ve made a baby blanket with the yarn. I also crocheted an afghan for my Mom, who is in a nursing home in Mississippi. The yarn had to standup to their cleaning process and so far, it has handled the cleaning well and it is so soft. So if you’re looking for a soft yarn with a lot of colors that stands up to everyday use then I highly recommend Caron Simply Soft.
Now my very sad news. In August 2013 I wrote in a blog post about making the Aeolian Shawl, for my Sister-in-law, Jacquie. As a lifelong crocheter, she decided to learn to knit after I gave it to her. She learned very quickly and enjoyed the heck out of it, mostly making dishcloths for everyone, but also a blanket, socks, a hat and some scarves. On Friday October 26 of this year she passed away from complications related to her battle with cancer. She had been fighting this for two years and her body just couldn’t take it anymore. I will miss her terribly. She was my friend, my sister, my crafting buddy, and my family confidant. She listened to all my rants about family stuff, offering advice when needed and letting me cry on her shoulder when there was no advice to give. She and my brother-in-law, Lin, always let us stay at their house when we visited the family. Jacquie was the consummate hostess for all the Thanksgiving and Christmas family events. And she so loved her grandchildren. She had six of them, the oldest 26 and the youngest almost a year old. She will be missed by her three children, six grandchildren, but most of all her husband of 52 years. Bless you Jacquie, I loved you so much.
